The repositioning of Colony Square into a gleaming new urban mixed-use center has taken a step forward this week, with major demolition work getting underway.
Work crews are well on their way to demolishing an old two-story office block along 15th Street, while the base of the marquee tower at the corner of 14th and Peachtree streets—known officially as Building 100—has been gutted.
The demolition follows a purely ceremonial “groundbreaking” nearly two months ago.
In place of the old office block, a new six-story building is slated to rise. The glassy mid-rise, a far aesthetic cry from the heavy concrete of the current complex, will house retail and restaurants on the ground floor, as well as a FitLab Fitness Club and offices above.
Completion of that building isn’t predicted until the end of 2019, but other projects should deliver sooner.
In just seven months, new retail spaces along Peachtree Street could debut at Building 100, opening in time to mark the 50th anniversary of the complex’s original unveiling.
The second phase, slated for delivery in March 2019, will bring new retail to the base of the complex’s second office tower, Building 400.
Ultimately, the reimagined complex will boast nearly 1 million square feet of space, including a Food Hall and movie theater.
